“Maybe You Need to Hire More Quality Testers"
A recent Computerworld article offered insight on the importance of testers and AI sklls. Put simply, the jobs lost to AI now will likely reappear for other roles, especially for those with AI skills. It gave this example:
While reductions in headcount are real, the savings from cutting those jobs will reappear elsewhere in hiring for other roles or tasks, said Deepak Seth, senior director analyst at Gartner.
For example, though Claude Code might help IT leaders reduce the number of developers they have on hand, one faulty software rollout could lead to new hiring to fill gaps, Seth said. “Maybe you need to hire more quality testers in another group."
How can you use this information as a tester?
- "One faulty software rollout" is a theoretical example, but there are many stories of AI-built software containing signficant defects, so this seems likely. As has been said by others, vibe-coding software is easy, but vibe-testing software is chaos. Help your management to understand this from a risk perspective.
- "Maybe you need to hire more quality testers". This is the answer given that code is growing exponentially. However, it's not enough to simply know testing. Those testers must have skills in testing AI and using AI to test. As noted below, experienced engineers are struggling to find jobs unless they have AI skills.
